The neon installation depicts the king of spades. Each character in a deck of cards generally represents a historical personality. The king of spades in this piece is king David. The symbolic choice addresses king David’s ambiguous nature: A musician and a poet (author of Old Testament psalms), he is also a man of wrath and justice. His famous battle with Goliath is read as a fight between good and evil. In this piece, Goliath is seen as king David’s alter ego, not as the “philistine foreigner”. The battle involved here takes place within the man himself.
